You Go, Girls!

My interest in beauty pageants (or, as Candice Bergen/Cathy Morningside would firmly say: “Scholarship Programs!”) extends only as far as Sandra Bullock and Miss Congeniality. But this news got my attention: for the first time ever, an openly gay contestant will compete to be Miss California USA.

Make that TWO openly gay contestants: Mollie Thomas and Jenelle Hutcherson.

This isn’t Hutcherson’s first time at the pageant rodeo; she made it to the finals of the Miss Long Beach pageant, wearing board shorts as swimwear, and a tuxedo for evening attire. She is a mentor at an LGBT Center and says, "We have the power to create a better future for our kids by setting an example of treating each other with love and equality."

Thomas has never competed in a pageant before, saying "I'm running for equality and will use this in order to promote visibility on current issues."

The winner of Miss California USA advances to compete for Miss USA.

Historic! You go, girls!
