You Tell 'Em, Debbie!

Mia’s mom was not particularly happy when she found out that her daughter was dating a woman (though we get along great now).

Mia’s mom lives in a state that doesn’t support gay marriage.

Mia’s mom votes Republican.

Mia’s mom is not known for writing letters.

This is why it was particularly surprising when she called yesterday to read us the letter she had written to New York State Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr., to call him out on his promise to annul any and all gay marriages from New York City.

The letter was a masterpiece: short and sweet, with that maternal edge perfected by mothers everywhere. When he reads it, he’s going to know he’s in trouble.

Her main argument was simple equality, though she also pointed out that marriages are civil contracts, and that therefore, Diaz’s position and outrage are just not logical. She also scolded him for taking his time away from issues that should be top priority, and basically called him out for being a buffoon, but she said it much better than that.

By the time she finished reading, my mouth was literally open. She doesn’t even live in New York! I was proud and happy that she was moved to speak her mind about his efforts to take away people's rights. I took a moment to compose myself and then thanked her for writing, saying how much it meant to us. She interrupted and said that she didn’t write only for us; she did it for everyone because that’s what was fair.

You tell ‘em Debbie!
